How do you remove a Ford Flathead intake valve assembly without the factory fork tool?

Ed uses a long screwdriver he bent and notched. He reaches down the intake port, pushes the guide down, pulls the lock out and lifts the whole valve assembly out. He dislikes the factory forked bar, which has to be jammed through the valve spring.
