Why won't new adjustable Flathead lifters adjust, and how does Ed fix them?

Ed says the adjusting screw has an interference thread so tight it will only turn about once before wrenches and sockets break. He lightly grinds the screw threads in three passes, a third of a turn apart, until the screw is snug but turns. He says it only needs to stay where it is put.
