Why did Ford change the Flathead V8 from 21 studs to 24 studs?
The 21-stud layout put a stud close to each cylinder bore, limiting bore enlargement while retaining enough head-gasket fire-ring area. The 24-stud layout created more room for a larger bore and more displacement.
