How can I distinguish a 1938 Ford Flathead from a 1939–1940 engine by the crankshaft snout?
The 1938 engine retained the short crankshaft snout, with the pulley close to the front of the engine. The 1939–1940 engine used a noticeably longer snout that places the pulley retaining bolt farther forward.
