How does Ed convert a Flathead three-speed to an open driveshaft?

Ed plans to replace the engine's original column-shift Ford three-speed with a side-shift Flathead three-speed he has located; with its adapter it takes an open drive shaft instead of a closed tube. He adds that a 1953 Ford with a different bellhousing could have had a three-speed overdrive.
