Why is the rear of a French Flathead block modified for hot rod use?
Steve says the French block had a big cast pad on the back whose purpose he has only heard guesses about. It gets in the way of a car's firewall, so his block was machined down before he got it and now sticks out far less. He reads a stamped 89 on the pad as a possible build year.
