What are windage losses in a Flathead oil pan?
Steve explains that the spinning crankshaft runs through oil and the wind it creates, which costs power, especially at higher RPM, where it can pick oil up off the bottom of the pan and aerate it into a poor lubricant. The early pan he shows, 1948 and back and 1935 or later by its crankcase vent hole, has nothing in it to control that.
