How does a Ford three-speed overdrive shift into overdrive?

Ed explains that the three-speed overdrive goes through first, second and third gear, and then when the driver lets up on the gas it goes into fourth gear, or overdrive. He says Ford made them from 1949 to 1956 and even newer.
