Why did Ed cut an inch off a shaft on this Flathead's front drive?

After moving the mount forward an inch, Ed took the shaft out, pressed it off, cut an inch off it and pressed it back in so the fan, pulleys and everything else lined up again. As he puts it, one inch here and one inch less there keeps them in line and balances it back out.
