Why does Ed run a resistor with a transistor ignition on a 12-volt Flathead?

The engine has a Stromberg transistor ignition, which the customer sent with the coil. Even with a transistor ignition, Ed still runs the hot wire through a resistor to cut 12 volts down to maybe eight, which he says he always does, so that the ignition and coil do not get too hot; 12 volts would probably be a little hot. The engine is 12-volt and has a gear reduction starter.
