Which Flatheads does the five-speed adapter plate fit, and why did Ed choose a 1949–1953 engine?

Ed says the adapter plate with its ring will go on any Ford Flathead engine. He chose a 1949 to 1953 motor for this build because it has the bell housing; without that you would have to use the smaller one, which he finds difficult and does not like.
