What do supercharger sizes like 142 and 174 mean?

Joe explains that the number is the blower's displacement: a 142 moves 142 cubic inches of air per revolution. Sizes such as 174 or 256 are the same kind of figure, so they are a comparison of air volume per revolution. A size such as 14-71 is different; he says that is a diesel reference, not cubic inches.
