Why did the oil pan have to come off to get the flywheel out of this 1935 Flathead?

Ed says the engine is a 1935 Ford truck Flathead that a friend had for about 20 years, with 50,000 original miles, out of a 3/4-ton truck. To get the clutch and flywheel out of it, the oil pan had to come off, and the pan had about an inch of sludge in it. The plan is to put a C4 automatic behind it for a Model T Ford.
