automatic transmission conversion · FF-0241
How does a torque converter fit inside the built-in bell housing of an early Flathead?
Ed uses a small-diameter torque converter so it will go in the hole where the clutch used to come out, inside the bell housing that is cast onto the early block, about three and a half inches of it. The converter has to be put on the transmission first and the whole unit shoved into the hole together. Asked whether the older-style block is a problem for adapting, Ed says a little bit, but not a problem for his shop.
