Should all three carburetors on a Flathead be hooked up to open together?

Ed disagrees with it. The owner said the linkage was progressive, but he had all three carburetors hooked up straight, and he had a power brake hooked into the back carburetor. Ed notes the engine has a good aftermarket electronic distributor and good compression, so neither of those explained the miss.
