Can you mount an early Flathead on an engine stand by the bell housing?

Steve advises against it. People try to bolt an engine stand to the back of the extended bell housing on the earlier engines, and while it will probably hold a little, more than one of these engines has been broken that way. The casting is quite thin there, far less than a quarter of an inch, and usually will not hold the engine up.
