Why does a Flathead engine stand bolt to the exhaust side of the block?
Because the bell housing casting will not carry the engine, the stand is set up so the engine bolts on from the side, where the exhaust manifold would bolt. Steve says that makes a very sturdy way to work on the engine, and the mechanism still lets you turn it upside down and lock it in place wherever you want to work on it.
