How do you install a rope seal in a Ford Flathead so it does not leak?
Steve recommends the graphite-based seals, which he finds far easier than traditional rope seals and which do not need soaking in oil. Lay the seal in the groove and push it in with your fingers, then roll it home with a deep socket of about 3/4 or 7/8 inch laid on its side, like a rolling pin. Put the cardboard shim most suppliers include on the block and trim the excess with a knife, leaving about 20 thousandths standing proud. He says they seal almost perfectly every time.
