What do a graphite rope seal and a one-piece front seal for a Flathead look like?
Steve shows a graphite seal, which is square in section where traditional rope seals are round, so it fits the groove well; graphite is smooth, low friction and packs tightly. He also shows the aftermarket one-piece front seal: a smooth sleeve goes on the crankshaft (the Ford sleeve has grooves that push oil back), the seal slides over it, and the timing cover and oil pan close around it with a little RTV sealant on the outside. He says his engine showed not a drop of oil front or back on the dyno.
