What decides where an engine's power peaks?
Steve calls an engine just an air pump. How you let air and fuel in and out gives the engine its personality; the crank, rods and pistons are the same basic technology in a Honda, a Toyota or a Flathead Ford. The camshaft, compression ratio, carburetor and fuel decide the shape of the curves: a hot rod likes a 5,000 to 6,000 RPM peak, a street engine wants torque at 2,500 to 3,000. That package sets the rollover point.
