How was a 3D scanner used to design a Flathead windage tray?

After Steve's cardboard tray had reached its sixth version, Hayden Benzing suggested a 3D scan. Steve lent him a pan, and Hayden scanned the pan and the bottom of the engine to get the contours, measurements and sizes into the computer software. He then designed the tray to clear the crank, the pickup tube and the oil pump, sit low enough in the pan, and carry small extra baffles and tabs to mount it.
