What made fitting the oil pan on this 1938 Flathead so hard?

The 1938 pan is shaped differently: Ed shows that the other pan came up and around and went one way, while this pan curves over and comes the other way, so it needs a special gasket. That gasket comes in the gasket set, and Ed found the right one. The pan is also dented a few thousandths at the back, so he cannot use the longer piece there, and Barry asks whether he has to take that part off a 1934 pan.
