When did the column shift come in, and what is a side shift?
Ed calls the design primitive and says he will have to look up when it was originally designed. It is a side shift, which means a column shift. On camera they are not sure when the first column-shift car came: 1939 had a shift on the floor, and they think it could have been 1940.
